Steyning is one of those Sussex towns that rewards a slow walk. Its broad High Street is lined with medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings — many listed, most beautiful, and a good number still warmed by original fireplaces. It’s the kind of place where history has been well looked after, and a chimney sweep in Steyning finds no shortage of traditional work.
The town’s origins are ancient. King Æthelwulf of Wessex — father of Alfred the Great — is said to have been buried here in the 9th century, and the imposing Norman church of St Andrew and St Cuthman still dominates the town centre today. Brotherhood Hall, one of the finest medieval buildings in West Sussex, stands as a reminder of the town’s former importance as a trading centre.
Steyning sits at the foot of the South Downs, with Chanctonbury Ring visible on the ridge above — one of Sussex’s most recognisable landmarks, and a fine backdrop when you’re parking up for a sweep. Nearby Bramber Castle adds further Norman drama to this corner of the county.
Whether your home is a flint cottage on Church Street or a newer property on the edge of town, Van Dyke Sweeps is proud to serve Steyning. Call Pete on 07376 612222 to book your sweep.
