Henfield is the sort of Sussex village that people move to and never leave — and given the surroundings, it’s hard to argue with them. Sitting at the foot of the South Downs with the River Adur nearby, it combines a genuine village community with easy access to Brighton and beyond.
The village has a quietly quirky character. Its most famous landmark is arguably the Cat House on the High Street — a cottage adorned with carved cats along the roofline, reportedly placed there by a former owner in protest after his neighbours’ cats were causing mischief. It’s that kind of place. Henfield Museum, tucked inside the village hall, tells a surprisingly rich local story, and the village common has been grazed for centuries.
Like much of the Sussex weald, Henfield has its smuggling history too — the isolated lanes and farmsteads of this part of the county were well suited to moving contraband inland from the coast. The farmhouses and older properties in and around the village are a reminder of how rural this corner of Sussex still feels, even today.
